Some properties call for timber — the warmth and character of real wood against brick and stone is hard to beat, and it’s exactly the sort of traditional entrance our metalwork heritage grew up alongside. For a property in Hanbury, just up the lane from our own workshop, we designed and hand-built a wooden driveway gate to suit a classic frontage.

The brief

The entrance sits between brick pillars on a cobbled approach — a traditional setting that would have looked wrong with anything sharply modern. The owners wanted a timber gate with real presence: solid and private at the base, more open and elegant towards the top, and automated so it’s as easy to live with as it is to look at.

The design

We designed a pair of swing gates in timber, with a boarded lower section for privacy and strength and a railed top that lifts the whole gate and lets light through — a traditional combination that suits a period-style property. Every part was drawn to the exact width and height of the opening, so the gate frames the entrance rather than simply filling it.

Timber is the right choice when character matters most: a real wooden gate weathers with the property and carries a warmth that painted metal can’t quite match. Built and finished properly, it’s made to be enjoyed for years.

The build and install

This is craft work, and it’s all ours: the joinery, the finish and the automation were done in-house at our workshop near Droitwich. Taking a timber gate from drawing through joinery and finishing to working electronics under one roof is how the styling, the fit and the automation all come together as one considered piece.

On site, the pair was hung between the brick pillars and automated for open-at-the-touch-of-a-button use, installed to Gate Safe standards with the safety features an automated gate needs.

The result

A traditional wooden entrance that belongs to its setting — solid, private and full of character, and easy to use every day. It’s a good example of why “we make it, we install it” matters for timber especially: a hand-built wooden gate, designed for one specific entrance, isn’t something you order from a catalogue.
